Discover the breathtaking beauty of Buatong Waterfall and its unique sticky rocks, a must-visit in Chiang Mai.

Deep in the heart of Chiang Mai’s attractions, lies the mesmerizing Buatong Waterfall. Known locally as Nam Tok Bua Tong, and affectionately called the Stick Waterfall, this natural wonder promises an experience unlike any other. With its cascading streams and unique limestone formations, this destination holds a special place among the best places to visit in Chiang Mai.

It was a sunny weekday when I decided to visit this hidden gem. The journey to the waterfall was serene, with lush greenery lining the roads and the soft rustling of leaves creating a soothing soundtrack. As I approached the waterfall, the cool mist in the air was a welcome sign of the adventure ahead.

Nature’s Marvel: Why Buatong Waterfall Stands Out

Unlike ordinary waterfalls, the Buatong Stick Waterfall boasts limestone-coated rocks that provide a grippy surface. This rare feature allows visitors to climb the falls safely, turning a regular sightseeing trip into an exhilarating hands-on adventure. As I cautiously stepped onto the water-coated rocks, I marveled at how easy it was to scale the tiers.

The waterfall has four tiers, each offering a unique perspective of the cascading water. Starting from the first tier, a tranquil picnic area shaded by towering trees, the journey down unveils pools of crystal-clear water. Each tier is a testament to nature’s artistry, with water sparkling like diamonds under the sunlight.

The Radiant Seven-Color Spring

No visit to Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall is complete without seeing the nearby Seven-Color Spring. This natural spring, about 6x8 meters in size, is where the water for the falls originates. The clear, cool water reflects a spectrum of colors when sunlight hits its surface, earning it the nickname “Rainbow Spring.” The spring is also considered a spiritual site by locals, adding a layer of cultural significance to the visit.
