Exploring the Beauty and Significance of Wat Chedi Luang

Wat Chedi Luang, also known as the Temple of the Large Stupa, is an ancient and historic Buddhist temple located in the heart of Chiang Mai, Thailand. With a history that spans over 600 years, Wat Chedi Luang is a must-visit for anyone who plans a trip to this city in Northern Thailand. The name Wat Chedi Luang translates to the Royal Pagoda or the Great Stupa Temple in English.

One of the most popular features of Wat Chedi Luang is the huge chedi (pagoda). The pagoda is not quite as massive today as it once was due to the destruction that took place in the past. There are two theories as to when this chedi was destroyed - one theory is that it was destroyed during an enormous earthquake in 1545 and the other is that it was destroyed by cannon fire during the Burmese conflict in 1775. The construction of the chedi began in 1391, and it was finally completed in 1475, under the reign of King Tilokarat. The temple grounds also housed two viharns (sermon halls), one of which is the largest and most impressive, built in 1928 and decorated with a three-tiered roof and gold ornate decoration.

Another popular activity at Chedi Luang temple is participating in the famous monk chat club, open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The friendly monks are happy to chat with tourists, as they get to practice their English language skills while tourists can learn more about the lives of Buddhist monks and their culture and religion. The temple grounds also house a small building that houses the Sao Inthakin (Pillar of Lord Indra), also known as the City Pillar, and three huge Dipterocarp trees, said to help protect the city.

Chedi Luang temple was originally the home of the Emerald Buddha for nearly a century, until a few years after the partial destruction of the temple. The replica of the Emerald Buddha can still be found at Wat Chedi Luang today, in one of the niches at the top of a staircase.
